HERALDIC CHALLENGE

As proclaimed by

Signore Giudo di Niccolo Brunelleschi
February  11, 2005

A random herald walks up to you with a glove in his hand and whaps it against your face.

"I challenge you to...HERALDIC DISPLAY!" the herald proclaims.

That's right folks...this is a CHALLENGE to everyone in the Iowa Groups to produce something heraldic. The culminating event to showcase your end results will be at Melon Wars in the Incipient Shire of Flynthill on April 9th...two months away from now.

This challenge was sparked by the notion that we are heading into the War season, and everyone needs some sort of war banner...right? That...and what a better way to start getting people in the mood to prepare for Lilies War.

SO...here are the details that you all need to know:

Competition: Heraldic Display in ANY and EVERY Medium

Sponsors & Judges: Lord Einarr Grimsson (Flynthill), Signore Giudo di Niccolo Brunelleschi (Deodar), and Lady Jacqueline de Meux (Couer d'Ennui)...with the aid of the rest of Master Modar's students.

There will be three categories for entries:

1) Livery & Heraldic Garb: This includes tabbards, baldrics, pavillions, tablecloths, cloaks, and anything else cloth related that can be found in an encampment.

2) Banners & Flags: This includes all varieties of war banners, pennons, standards, etc.

3) Miscellaneous: This includes all other entries of heraldic display, whether it is woodworking, pottery, armoring, bead making, book stamps, etc. If it's not cloth and could have heraldic display on it, it's in this category.

Entries are ENCOURAGED from everyone at ANY skill level.

Each category will have a winner, with an overall winner being awarded a travelling banner to which they may add their device to. It is the hopes that this will become a YEARLY competition, so that the travelling banner will essentially become a Roll of Arms.

It is also encouraged for individuals to think outside of the box and make at least ONE attempt to create some form of heraldic display that can be presented as largesse to either the Kingdom *OR* to an Iowa Group NOT your own. We're all good friends and neighbors, so why not help each other out, right?

Just remember: There are NO restrictions for armorial achievements as defined by Calon Law. There IS a populace badge that can be used. AND...there is a Calon Ensign that people may use for flags and banners. Find your local herald for more details if you need ideas on how to utilize any of these items.

That's what we are here for...right heralds?

And with that...you ALL have TWO MONTHS to come up with some sort of heraldic display to meet this challenge. Bring your finished works to Melon Wars and make Modar's students pull their hair out (what little we may have) trying to determine the best heraldic display.

Can you meet the challenge?
